Wichita State's return to prominence: Looking back at the decade

In 1999, it was hard to fall in love with Wichita State men’s basketball. Following the Shockers meant enduring losing, coaching changes and smelly subterranean restrooms in decaying Levitt Arena.

That is the situation Jim Schaus inherited when hired as athletic director. Levitt Arena stood at least a decade or two past its prime. Schaus knew the next decade hinged on fixing the building that housed his teams.

“That was the one single activity that transformed our program,” Schaus said.
