Scam spoofs Visa to rip off consumers

Published April 9, 2009 at 5:39 p.m.

Scam artists are spoofing an online credit-fraud-prevention system in an effort to commit online credit fraud, the state attorney general warned today.

Attorney General Steven Six urged Kansans to watch out for an e-mail scam being perpetrated by crooks falsely claiming to represent the "Verified by Visa" program.

Verified by Visa is an actual program offered by Visa International Inc., the world's largest credit card company. It allows card users to establish a password to increase security when shopping at selected online retail sites.

But someone is sending bogus e-mail messages to Kansans falsely claiming to be from the company.

The phony message instructs cardholders to sign up for the Verified by Visa program by downloading a form and pasting it into their Web browser.
